Legendary game show host and political activist Chuck Woolery speaks on the goal of Restart Congress.
Americans Can Make a Difference
Americans are ready for a revolution. With Congressional approval ratings at an all-time low, it is clear that we are fed up with the abuse of power, partisan gridlock and lack of representation that has defined Congress for many years.
Thankfully, it is possible to alter our corrupted Congress and disrupt their comfortable state of profit and inaction. Through our right to vote, Americans can change the face of Congress and insist upon better representation by demanding term limits for members of the House of Representatives and Senate.
Our goal is to have Congress pass an amendment to the Constitution that limits members of the House to a maximum of three 2-year terms and Senators to a maximum of two 6-year terms. This requires 2/3 of both the House and Senate to approve the amendment, then ratification by 75% of state legislatures. Two-thirds of state legislatures can also propose a Constitutional Convention to amend the Constitution.
Recent polls reveal that nearly 80% of Americans are in favor of term limits for Congress, but it is safe to assume that Congress is not going to limit its own power through an amendment without significant pressure from voters. And that is where we come in.
Currently, a number of Congressmen and candidates and have pledged support for term limits, but they are not enough. We need to back Congress into a corner on this important issue. We must let our representatives know that if they do not support term limits, they will not be given the opportunity to serve another one or two terms at all. We will absolutely vote them out of office in the next election.
Similarly, if a candidate does not support term limits, they will simply not get our support. Then we must follow through and vote accordingly. If enough of us take action, our representatives will know that this is a very serious issue for Americans, and their fate in office truly lies in our hands.
So if Americans feel this way, why must we call attention to this issue?
Despite extreme dissatisfaction with Congress as a whole, Americans historically re-elect incumbents about 90% of the time. Whether this happens because of name recognition, lack of knowledge, a fear that someone else may be even worse than the current Representative, or another reason, we must take our liberty in our own hands and vote responsibly.
We have been granted the right to vote, and it is time we use it to demand term limits for Congress to end career politics and corruption – and Restart Congress.
